Short description of the thesis

The present thesis analyses the six defence agreements concluded in Denmark between 1984 and 2004, with a view to examining how the agreements were formed and what considerations underpinned the decision-makers' political negotiations. Drawing on extensive archival material, the majority of which has not previously been utilised in research, the thesis examines both the national and international dimensions of Danish defence policy. In terms of the international dimension, the thesis undertakes a comprehensive analysis of threat perceptions and expectations from NATO. In addressing the domestic dimension, the analysis examines intra-governmental decision-making processes, party-political dynamics and political negotiations.
