Short description of the thesis

The PhD thesis Teaching Memory: History Education and Memory Mediation in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina explores how the wars of the 1990s are remembered, interpreted, and mediated through history education in secondary schools in Sarajevo, Belgrade, and Banja Luka. Drawing on classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students, the study examines the history classroom as a site of memory mediation, where official narratives interact with memories shaped by families, media, and the wider social environment. Comparing three distinct memory contexts, the thesis traces what is emphasized, silenced, or contested and examines how history education contributes to the transmission and interpretation of memories of the recent past.
